New Year’s Honours at Dronfield RFC

Dronfield Rugby Club’s Chairman included in the New Years Honours List

It was announced in the recent 2026 New Year’s Honours List that Terry Hensby, Chairman of Dronfield Rugby Club, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) The citation reads ‘Volunteer- Dronfield Rugby Club- For Services to Community Rugby’ The recommendation was made by the Prime Minister on the advice of the Main Honours Committee following independent assessment procedures

In the next couple of months Terry will be presented with his British Empire Medal by the Lord Lieutenant of the County (His Majesty’s Representative in the County), Terry will also receive an invitation to attend a Royal Garden Party

Terry has been involved with Dronfield Rugby Club for over 50 years. When in 1971 he moved locally to become a teacher and having an interest in rugby, he decided to join a local club and chose Dronfield Over the years a considerable number of his ex-pupils came to join him at Dronfield with some going on to represent Derbyshire and NLD Colts and Dronfield Senior sides.

After a short period away from the club Terry realised how much he missed his involvement and returned He has never looked back, being involved in different capacities with the club ever since. On returning, like many ex- players, Terry continued his involvement in other roles, first as a coach and then moving into administrative roles

On hearing about his award Terry said ‘Whilst this is a great honour for me it is also a recognition of Dronfield Rugby Club, its volunteers and the work done by them in Dronfield and the surrounding community’

Terry eventually became Chairman of the club and whilst still holding that position he is also coaching once more as his grandson is a member of Dronfield Under 9’s team.

‘Joining the rugby club is one of the best things I ever did – I am lucky to have made so many friends. I also realise that there are thousands of other people involved in promoting sports to future generations, many of them doing more than me, who do not receive the recognition they deserve.’

On hearing of Terry’s award Dronfield Rugby Club President Carl Pass said ‘Terry is a dedicated member of our club introducing many youngsters, including myself, to the enjoyment and camaraderie of Rugby Union. He has influenced and supported players throughout their careers and beyond and richly deserves his award as recognition of his devotion to local sport.
