11th February 2018 – NLD UNDER 20 Jason Leonard Cup – their first victory of their 2018 campaign.
NLD under 20s had a hard fought win 29-19 over Leicestershire away at Melton Mowbray RFC in the first of their pool games.
With having had over 45 players training at the 3 sessions so far, the match day squad had to be whittled down to 22 with 2 travelling reserves. The squad featured representatives from 9 clubs and universities. Congratulations to all those who played.
There were tries from Jack Weedon, Jacob Wright, Arran Walker and Malvin Mazoredze and the team was Captained by the duo of Dan Glasse and Joe McMemamin.
An unfortunate red card after 25 minutes meant that NLD played 55 minutes with only 14 men. The communication and motivation within the squad was a pleasure to watch with some brilliant defence around the breakdown. Once the squad started to build phases the pressure told on Leicestershire.
Team manager Graeme Gunn said “The effort and quality of rugby played was superb considering we have only been able to have 3 main training sessions, no warm up games and the sticky conditions on the day. The players really took ownership on the pitch and the result speaks for itself”
There is one more training session on Sunday the 18th February and then the squad is off down to play Oxfordshire at Chinnor RFC on Sunday 25th February. Kick off 2.30pm. Any support will be welcome.
The coaching team of The coaching team of Nic Corrigan, Matt Derbyshire and Jon Welham now have the tough job of selecting the squad for this next game. They are delighted with the result and will be working to improve further before the next fixture.
