The current expanded NLD U17s Squad took on Leics. U17s side at Newark RFC on Wednesday 24th April.
In perfect conditions, given the localised thunderstorms and flooding earlier in the afternoon, the match was evenly contested by the two sides with everyone trying their hardest to impress the selectors and press a claim for inclusion in the respective U18s Squads for next season.
From the early exchanges, it became clear that NLD would be the side to play their rugby with more width and ambition, while Leics. sought to dominate the game with their sizeable pack and strong mauling approach. Both methods demonstrated merit with the NLD tries coming from out wide after sustained possession and controlled phase play, in contrast to the Leics. scores which generally came from line-outs and driving mauls.
Both sets of watching Coaches had plenty of opportunity to evaluate the efforts of the players involved and will have gone away better informed when making the final selections for their respective Squads to compete in the Midlands campaign next season.
The sizeable crowd gathered at Kelham Road enjoyed a competitive and well contested game with Leics. running out ‘winners’ by a single score.
