Newark U15 Girls topped their league this season after winning all their matches. They have progressed as individuals and as a team and in doing so earned the right to play in the Regional Semi-Finals and Final. Sunday March 8th at Lutterworth RFC saw Newark and Aylstone St.James take to the field in what turned out to be a fiercely contested game amongst 2 evenly matched sides.
Despite being camped in their own half for the first 10 minutes Newark put up a solid defence and when the opportunity arose took the ball in both hands and broke Aylestone line. It was to and fro for most of the first half until Newark created space out wide and Sophie Hill ran in a superb try to break the deadlock. Newark 5 v Alystone St. James 0. The game settled into another period of hard play counting down the minutes to half time, 5-0.
The second half saw Aylstone pile on the pressure from the start but Newark managed to keep their line and soak up the pressure until 5 minutes in when Aylstone powered over Newark’s line to even the scores 5-5. Both sides were now looking to score again and in a thumping tackle Newark’s Captain was injured which resulted in the game being moved to the spare pitch. Newark took the restart and promptly went on the attack camping on Aylestone’s 5 metre line. The pressure eventually paid off when the ball again went wide and Sophie Hill scored her second try of the afternoon, 10-5.
Not to be out played Aylstone again piled on the pressure and eventually saw just rewards with a try under the posts which was duly converted, 10-12. In the midst of Aylstones celebrations Newark took a quick restart and thumped the ball deep into Aylstones half. A brilliant chase down put the returning full back under pressure which resulted in a scrum, put in to Newark, again 5 metres from Aylstones line. Newark won the ball and with quick hands and a brilliant step saw Jess Weaver going over the line in the dying seconds to seal the game 15-12.
It was a well fought contest that could have gone either way but in the end Newark just managed to take the honours’ with some audacious last minute rugby. Thank you to the Aylstone girls for such a closely fought game, Lutterworth RFC for hosting the afternoon but most of all to Yvonne on of Aylstone’s coaches who selflessly stayed to assist with Newark’s injured Captain.
