East Retford RFC took home the award for ‘Sports Club of the Year’ at the recent Bassetlaw Sports Awards.
In 2015 this club has seen a huge transformation, in no small part due to the hard work of Kurt Spencer and Paul & Ellen Barrett.
Several years ago the junior section at Retford Rugby Club was struggling with very few players but through the work of people like Kurt, Paul & Ellen in 2015 over 150 young people from Bassetlaw play competitive Rugby Union every week in Retford.
In September the club hosted a “Have A Go” day with over 200 children taking part in all forms of Rugby.
In October, East Retford Rugby Club hosted a fixture against Notts Casuals at every age group from U 6 s to U 16 s with the home side undefeated throughout the day.
The club now run school holiday training camps and organise festivals for Secondary Schools, as well as sending Qualified Coaches into local Primary & Secondary Schools to help recruit even more young players.
It is true to say, the great work of Kurt, Paul & Ellen is paying off and the future is very bright for the club.
