Young Officials Programme Launched!

June 13th, 2016 by

The beginning of the month saw the launch day for the NLD Young Officials Programme at Southwell RFC which saw a fantastic turnout of 57 young people from a range of clubs, including MANSFIELD, NEWARK, PAVIORS, SOUTHWELL, BAKEWELL, CHESTERFIELD, DRONFIELD, DERBY, LONG EATON, GRIMSBY, SCUNTHORPE, LINCOLN, KESTEVEN and STAMFORD.

The Young Officials received presentations and workshops from Jake Hill – a Young Official who started his journey back in 2013 and is now refereeing Level 6 games following a fantastic start to his refereeing career, Paul Carroll from the NLD Referees Society who spoke to them about the potential pathway they have should they choose to join the Society and John Widdowson (Match Official Development Officer) who highlighted just how important the role is that they play in the game of rugby. During a practical session outdoors they were given the opportunity to referee with various different scenarios in games. They displayed some fantastic refereeing skills and knowledge throughout the day, demonstrating huge potential for the programme as they embark upon their officiating journey. With the correct support from the club, we hope they will maximise their opportunities and experiences.

The Young Officials will now work with their Mentors to develop their experience and will be invited to attend the Level 2 Refereeing Course on 25th-27th October as the next stage of their development.

If you would like to join the programme then please contact Nicole Brown at [email protected].

Young Officials in the Making

February 19th, 2016 by

Yesterday NLD welcomed 45 future young officials to Samworth Academy in Mansfield to take the RFU’s Refereeing Children Level 1 Award.  Delivered by RFU professional staff and fully funded by NLD the course was focussed on introducing young players aged 14-18 to refereeing.

The aim was to give the opportunity to develop future young officials, improving their confidence and competence with the whistle.  All attendees will then be given the opportunity to attend a Level 2 Refereeing Course later in the season to enable them to officiate the 15 a side game as well.

Andrew Highton, RFU Rugby Development Officer for Nottinghamshire commented; ‘The course was a great success and with the launch of the NLD Young Officials Programme this Easter it’s a really exciting time for refereeing in NLD’.

NLD Referees Society Chairman Paul Carroll came along to the day and he said; ‘Referees are essential to the future of the game we love and it was fantastic to see so many young players keen to take on this role.  We hope that many of them will continue to develop the refereeing skills they have learnt today and go on to complete the Level 2 course, work within their clubs and even join the Referees Society.’  level1refereescourse2
