NLD RFU Launch Youth Council!

NLD RFU are delighted to announce the launch of the NLD Youth Council for the 2018-19 season and beyond!  Mirroring the RFU National Youth Council this is a fantastic opportunity for young people, who are passionate about rugby, to get involved in shaping the way NLD RFU supports the 16-24 age group.

What is the NLD Youth Council? 

We are looking to appoint a group of young people to form the NLD Youth Council for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons (two year term of office).  The successful applicants will be between 16-24 years of age and be passionate about developing the game within NLD while learning lots of new skills to develop both personally and professionally.

  • Actively involved in rugby in any way, whether it be as a Player, Coach, Referee or Volunteer

  • Experience within rugby union in a leadership capacity or as a role model for young people
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to learn and develop yourself
  • Ability to self-motivate with strong initiative and good organisational skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to travel independently (or have transport to meetings & events within the NLD RFU area)

NLD Game Development Conference 2018

NLD are delighted to confirm that Russell ‘Rusty’ Earnshaw, England U18 Coach, will be the key speaker at this year’s NLD Game Development Conference.  The Conference, will be at held at Samworth Church Academy on Saturday 2nd June 2018.

The theme for the day will be ‘Game Zone / Skill Zone & developing core skills through games.’ In addition to Russell Earnshaw there will also be Skills Clinics delivered by some Professional Players as well as a CMOD for NLD Young Match Officials.

NLD Head of Game Development Dave Andrews commented, ‘The conference has been growing year upon year and we are delighted that Russell will be joining us in 2018.  It promises to be an event not to be missed!’

Places for the Conference will be limited and will open in April – be sure to save the date in your diary now!

Lincolnshire Volunteers Take a Trip to Twickenham

School teachers and club coaches from Market Rasen and Sleaford were invited guests of Community Rugby Coaches Nathan Smith and David Cotton-Betteridge to Twickenham on Friday 16th February to watch England train in a rare open session at Twickenham stadium. Over 10,000 spectators attended the session which ran from 09:45 to 11:45. The team from Lincolnshire were treated on arrival with World Cup winning legend Jonny Wilkinson sharing his kicking expertise with the current goal kickers Owen Farrell and George Ford. The remaining squad players were all busy with their individual preparations before a very thorough and intense warm up period started shortly after 10:00am. Several clubs in Lincolnshire have now taken part in the Activate workshop and it was great for those present to see international players replicating this initiative.

Throughout the warm up period we were given a running commentary on England’s week including feedback on an intense couple of days training against Georgia. As the players left the field to hydrate and prepare for their main session the crowd were treated to Head Coach Eddie Jones taking 5 minutes to explain the format for the session as well as feeding back on why the players had warmed up in a specific way. Eddie explained in detail that the session would focus heavily on kick chase into defence and would last for exactly 40 minutes at an intensity higher than game pace.

As the words of Jerusalem rang out around the stadium the England squad re took the field, already split into teams and ready for what was certainly a frantic 40 minutes of activity. The players never stopped once as they covered every inch of the Twickenham turf, running, tackling, sprinting, kicking and replicating moves that they believe will see them undefeated throughout the current 6 Nations. For the second time in the day we met another World Cup winning legend as former back rower Richard Hill took to the mike explaining what the players and coaches were trying to achieve and the attention to detail was incredible. The training was refereed by world renowned ref Wayne Barnes and each player wore GPS trackers that Hill explained would be reviewed intently by the fitness experts attached to the squad. Whilst the warm up was done with England match balls from Gilbert the game was played with Scottish match balls ahead of England’s visit to Edinburgh.

Towards the end of the session the forwards and backs split after their 40 minutes and were joined in the stadium by His Royal Highness Prince Harry who spent time with Wilkinson and Hill before meeting a group of under privileged players who’d been invited to join some of the injured squad members. We didn’t join the massive queues for autographs but enjoyed listening to players being interviewed before eating lunch in the Twickenham Marriot Hotel and returning to Lincolnshire tired but full of new ideas.

Nathan Smith commented ‘ Our thanks to Mike, Tracy and NLD in general for their very kind donation of lunch and to Gareth Short for supplying our guests with a goody bag each.’

NLD Club Coaching & Referee Coordinator Meetings

We are pleased to be hosting NLD Club Coaching & Referee Coordinator meetings in 2018. These meetings are aimed specifically at helping you to work within your clubs and deliver a high quality and safe experience in rugby whether it be coaching, playing or volunteering.

We are running two events and you can pick the event that is most convenient for you.

There will be food available on arrival on the evening.

NLD U16 & U20 Coaching Teams Announced

Following the recent round of interviews, there is good news for our young, aspiring players within the NLD area with the announcement of brand new coaching teams for both the U16’s and U20’s squads.

The U16’s Squad will be developed and coached by:

Darren Hall – Lead Coach
Neil Stent – Coach
Neil Whitehead – Coach

In addition, the three man coaching team will be joined by:

Adrian Taylor – Squad Manager

The U20’s will also have a completely new set of coaches:

Nic Corrigan – Lead Coach
Matt Darbyshire – Coach
Jon Welham – Coach

This new group will be ably assisted by the existing U20’s Squad Manager, Graeme Gunn.

Ashfield RUFC Seek Forwards Coach

Ashfield RUFC are looking for an experienced Forward’s Coach to join a motivated and forward thinking team.

Ideally they would be qualified to a Level 2 standard or working towards Level 2.

They require someone who is willing to work within a team but is also confident to work unsupervised with the players.

Ashfield RUFC are currently moving towards a new facility with a Clubhouse and also two new pitches to complement their current sites. The Coaching team are focusing on moving this Club forward and are currently working with a group of players who are committed and want to play Rugby at a higher level.

Colts Rugby – Safeguarding Tips

The Colts structure is proving a great success in retaining young players and transitioning them into the adult game and is to be applauded.

The first few weeks of the season have brought into focus a few issues which we need to clarify to ensure the success of this structure and to manage the risk to players, coaches and clubs. This is not placing barriers in the way of Colts rugby, it is the opposite – ensuring that barriers imposed by existing criminal laws and RFU regulations are properly managed so they do not impact adversely on this important transition.

  1. Age Grades

Colts rugby is Age Grade Rugby, and has to adhere to RFU Regulation 15. http://www.englandrugby.com/mm/Document/General/General/01/31/97/52/RFURegulation152016-2017_English.pdf

Age Grade Rugby is played by players in the Under 18 age grade and below. That is, by players who are not yet 18 on the 31st August of the preceding season.

Players who are 18 or older before the start of the season cannot play in a Colts game unless they have been suitably risk assessed and have applied for and received NLD CB approval to play down. Details of this process and the application form are set out in the Playing Out Of Age Grade guidance here https://nldrfu.co.uk/resource/playing-age-grade/.

Players in the Under 16 and Under 17 age grades may play up in an Under 18 Colts team if they have been assessed as able to do so and the Playing Out Of Age Grade form has been completed, signed off by the club and submitted to the NLD office. U16 players may not play in the front row of contested scrums if playing up in a Colts game.

If the game is classed as an Under 19 game then this is Adult Rugby. In this circumstance the following apply:

  1. DBS requirements

Anyone coaching or supervising age grade rugby (including Colts rugby) is taking part in regulated activity as defined in the Children’s Act and supporting legislation and MUST have a valid DBS check. The RFU requires that this is an RFU sponsored DBS and that it is registered on the GMS system.

  1. Safeguarding issues when playing on a Saturday.

General

Be careful to ensure that behaviour of adults in and around the changing rooms and clubhouse sets a good example and does not exclude those U18.

Ensure that any involvement of U18 players in post match activities is age appropriate and does not expose the players, adults or club to breaches of the law.

Under 19s

If the game is an Under 19 game, that is there are no players under the age of 17 AND all those not yet 18 have been signed off to play Adult Rugby, then there are no other safeguarding issues to address.

Colts

Colts teams can include players aged 15 to 18. The following apply:

  • All supervising adults must have a current DBS recorded on GMS
  • Age Grade players must not share changing room or showering facilities with adult teams.

There are several simple precautions which can be put in place to ensure the changing and showering requirements are not an issue.

  • Where a club has sufficient changing rooms and dedicated showers for each changing room there are few issues to address. Ensure sufficient supervision is in place to prevent accidental issues such as unauthorised access to changing rooms or showers used by age grade players.
  • If there are not sufficient facilities to allow segregation of adults and colts then you could stagger the games. If shared showers is the issue, why not start the colts game 30 minutes or so before the adult games, giving time for the colts to vacate the showers before the adult game finishes?
  • If there are insufficient changing rooms to avoid sharing, then the game should be played at a different time, either earlier on the same day or another day.

NLD Funding Opportunties

We are pleased to now invite applications from clubs to access NLD funding for the 2017-18 season.

As some of you may be aware the NLD PFR (Planning, Funding & Reporting) Plan outlines the CB’s budget for each season.  The budget itself is split down into various key areas covering the RFU’s Key Drivers and is available to view in full here.

We are now inviting clubs to submit applications for access to the funding that is available to bid for, all of the details of which are available on the attached information sheet.

Please encourage your club to apply for funding by completing the attached application form and returning it to me (with all of the accompanying signatures) but Monday 9th October at the latest.  Applications can be either emailed or posted to NLD RFU, Northgate Business Centre, 38 Northgate, Newark, Notts, NG24 1EZ.

Applications will be considered by each of the budget holders and the relevant committees and decisions will be made as quickly as possible.

NLD Representative Coaching Opportunities

NLD are very excited to invite applications for the NLD U16 & U20 Representative Squad Coaching & Management Teams.

These are fantastic opportunities to get involved with developing some of the best young players that the CB has to offer and be a part of the journey that has seen numerous players from NLD go on to represent Midlands & England.

The NLD U20 Squad play in the RFU National U20 County Championship with matches being played in the Spring of each season.  The NLD U16’s Representative Programme runs from November – February with matches being played post Christmas.

Job Descriptions for each of the roles are available below, interested parties should complete and submit the application form to [email protected] by the closing date of Monday 11th September.
