NLD U17s Finish Season on a High

Staffordshire v NLD u17s

Friday 27th May 2022, KO 7.30pm

Venue: Burton RFC

On a windy evening in Burton, NLD U17s played probably the best rugby of their season.

Taking on a big Staffs pack, our forwards realised technique is key to good scrummaging and mauling.  Staffs barely left their own half in the first half with NLD scoring three unanswered tries including a well driven lineout maul from 15 metres out by the pack. We led 0-19 at the break.

The second half looked more daunting as NLD now had the wind to deal with, but some excellent kicking enabled NLD to keep on top and only when tiring near the end did a few tackles drop off which enabled the big runners in Staffs pack to make some ground, resulting in a consolation try.  The only downside was, with seconds left, NLD put a grubber kick behind Staffs try line and in diving at the ball to attempt the grounding our Winger fell awkwardly and broke his forearm.

He received some excellent on-pitch care from the Staffs physio team and went on to have surgery to pin it all in place. We wish Alex a swift recovery.

Final score Staffs 5 – NLD 36

This brings the NLD u17s 2022 campaign to a close, and on behalf of the coaching team I would like to thank the parents for getting the lads to training and matches and the clubs that have supported us.

We look forward to next season when this group move up to U18s and with the opportunity for new players to press for a place in the squad can only see them improving yet further.
