NLD Girls Round Up 2016

The girls NLD season has come to a close, with plenty of highs, some lows and some new starts.

The U13’s have started afresh with a new coaching team, led by Nick Woodland, working within new RFU directives. The numbers have been steady but not as strong as in previous season so there is some work to do there. The U13 season continues with the Round Robin events.

The NLD U15 Playing Squad has maintained their 100% record for the 3rd year in a row. The U15 Development Squad won both their encounters with Staffordshire despite the opposition having far more players. The bridge between the Development and playing squad has worked much better this season with several players proving their worth and being moved up to represent NLD. This is something we will look to continue to develop next season.

The U18’s won an oustanding game against Staffordshire on home turf, the squad’s first win in 3 years. We always knew this season was going to be a challenge for the U18’s losing the more experienced players to Senior rugby.  Despite the hard work and dedication of the squad, low numbers, inexperience and injuries inevitably took their toll and despite closely fought matches the tries didn’t quite come. Next season we will have a core of 3rd year players and some outstanding talent coming through from the U15’s so the U18’s will no doubt be building on this year’s experience.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank the number of people who have coached, completed paperwork for, organised their club venues, hosted and generally volunteered their time, knowledge and skills to allow the girls to play rugby and to the clubs that have supported NLD Girls Programme. I want also to thank NLD for their continued support of the girls programme. The biggest thank goes to you the players and your parents who take you to training and taxi you around the Midlands to stand in a cold, wet muddy field for 3 hours at a time. Wonderful. Good luck to all those players who have been selected for Academy Trials. Don’t worry you will be contacted directly by the relevant Age Group Managers.

We are looking to build the NLD “Girls Only 10’s Festival” next season, 300 girls sound too much? We are also looking into an NLD Girls tour to Ireland that incorporates the Womens Rugby World Cup Finals in August 2017 so keep watching!
