This year’s NLD Senior Knockout Finals took place at Mellish RFC on Saturday 23rd April. With a full schedule of matches, it was an action packed day with some fantastic rugby being played.
Cheered on by a large number of supporters who had travelled to the game Meden Vale overcame Lincolnshire rivals Skegness 34-12 in a match that was closer than the scoreline suggests.
Grimsby took on East Retford in the second game on the day and prevailed as 12-3 winners.
NLD Ladies v East Midlands Ladies
The exhibition match between NLD Ladies and East Midlands Ladies went down brilliantly. A lively encounter as both teams geared up for their first RFU County Championship matches in the coming weeks. It was an NLD victory with a late score taking the final score to 31-19.
With Scunthorpe fresh from securing the National Midlands 3 title last week and Ilkeston always dangerous as the under dogs this was a mouth-watering encounter.
Ilkeston started as they meant to go on and a converted try within the first 10 minutes saw them take a lead, which despite Scunthorpe’s best efforts, they never headed.
As the clock ticked down Ilkeston secured a historic victory and took the Cup home to Derbyshire with the final scoreline reading Scunthorpe 5 Ilkeston 22.
NLD President Sam Heath commented; ‘What a fantastic day of rugby! As always our thanks go to Mellish for their hospitality and to Dave Miller, Steve Allford and the NLD Senior Competitions Committee who have worked tirelessly on the competitions this season.
We look forward to the NLD Shield Final which will take place at Southwell RFC on Saturday 7th May between Nottingham Casuals and Glossop to conclude a fantastic season for the NLD Knockout Competitions.’
