Notts Lincs and Derbyshire U16 Twelve a Side Tournament
Five schools took part in this first cross counties tournament for several years held at Newark RFC on Wednesday 18th November. Nottinghamshire were represented by Tuxford Academy and Joseph Whitaker, Lincolnshire by King’s Grammar School and Derbyshire by Lady Manners School, Bakewell plus Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Ashbourne.
The tournament proved to be very competitive between Queen Elizabeth’s, Lady Manners and King’s who each won three games out of four. Having lost heavily to Queen Elizabeth’s in their first game Lady Manner’s played their best rugby in winning a high quality very close match with King’s who had defeated Queen Elizabeth’s by three tries to one.
Tuxford and Joseph Whitaker found it hard work against the top three sides who all come from more established schools who play more fixtures. However they proved to be hard physical competitors throughout and Joseph Whitaker just shaved the game between them.
The overall result came down to bonus points. QEGS had scored the most tries but this was negated by the losing bonus point that King’s had gained against Lady Manners and it was they who took home the trophy.
The tournament could not have been staged without the enthusiastic cooperation of Newark Rugby Club or the three referees who turned out on a blustery afternoon.
Credit is due to all five teams for playing hard but fair on the very heavy pitches. Hopefully the tournament will take place again next year and be extended to other schools and other age groups.
