It was a warm October evening with a leaf strewn pitch when the NLD took on Staffordshire at Burton on Trent RFC on Wednesday 21st October. The lads had only trained together a few times and this would be a real test of how quickly they could gel together in a competitive game.
NLD were caught by surprise in the first 5 minutes when Staffs ran a try down the wing with very little resistance. That was not the way we would have chosen to start but NLD regrouped and for the game had at least 80% of the possession. Unfortunately, they were unable to translate that into a score. Balls were dropped near the line and Staffs defended valiantly and won lots of turnover. Staff’s got another try and conversion and NLD had a try disallowed.
At half time the coaches asked the lads to get to the breakdowns quicker and spurred them on to even greater endeavours. They were faster, more aggressive and started to win turnovers themselves. Tre managed to pick the ball up from a bundle of bodies on the floor and we had our first try. Godders ran in our second and Kyles extendable arm managed to get us a third which we converted.
Staffs then managed a third themselves and he score ended at 19 to 17 to Staffs.
It was an exciting match to watch and every player played his socks off …heads never dropped and they encouraged each other throughout the game.
A special call out to George Dickinson who sustained an injury to his collar bone and had to be taken off. Physio was unsure if there was a break and we are waiting to hear how he is. Get well soon George
Next Match is 1st November and after this display the management team can’t wait.
