Nottingham Rugby Appoints New Academy Staff

Nottingham Rugby is pleased to announce the appointment of a brand new management and coaching team to the Nottingham Rugby Academy.

The club has confirmed that the role of Head Coach has been taken by Matt Everard and the assistant coach role by Joe Cobden, both members of the current Nottingham Rugby Senior Squad.

Nottingham Rugby Director, Simon Beatham said; “I am really pleased that Matt and Joe have agreed to take on these coaching roles and pass their experience from a professional environment onto a new generation of young players from NLD and surrounding areas.

“The main emphasis is to develop the players’ skills in a high quality environment and most importantly we play only a handful of high profile games throughout the season, so we will actively encourage the Academy players to continue playing at their home club to further develop their skills and abilities in regular game situations.”

We are also pleased to be able to confirm the appointment of our new Academy Manager, Chris Brookes, who is also currently the Midlands U20’s Manager and has a wealth of experience in the community game, with his home club being Long Eaton RFC.

Brookes said; “I am looking forward to developing the Nottingham Academy into something the Club, NLD (Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire) and the East Midlands can be very proud of.  Nottingham Rugby has high quality people and along with Matt Everard I am confident that we can produce an Academy system that will add to the clubs vision and continued development.”

The Academy will launch with a series of selection days, with the first of these being at Nottingham Trent University, targeting players in next years’ U17 to U20 age groups, with all participants expected to be a minimum of NLD Level and above or have the potential to play at this standard.

Nottingham Trent University (NTU) students have already confirmed their interest in being involved which further strengthens the links between NTU and Nottingham Rugby.  Several NTU students are currently in Martin Haag’s senior training squad, with more expected to trial during the summer period in the new transition group.

Neil Fowkes, who is both Nottingham 1st XV Forwards Coach and NTU’s Head Coach, said, “The links between the two organisations is growing stronger and it’s great to enable the best NTU students to access opportunities at the elite level and train alongside the 1st XV squad.  Several players have played senior Championship games and British and Irish Cup games, so is brilliant experience for all involved.”

The Academy will have several skills coaches from across NLD who have been appointed through an application process, with Cyril Yates (Scunthorpe RFC), Chris Harries (West Bridgford RFC) and Adam Gallagher (Trent College & Matlock RFC) joining the team, delivering specialist sessions to help and support the players.

Steve Smith, General Manager at Nottingham Rugby said, “We were inundated with people expressing an interest in the skills coaching roles and we are very pleased with the appointments of the three individuals.

“These will be supplemented with additional players and coaches from the senior squad plus guest coaches.  The whole structure that we have put in place will ensure that the Academy is of the highest quality and something the club can be very proud of and provide a suitable structure for elite players in NLD to aspire to.

“We are also really pleased that the Academy will also have guest appearances from our 1st XV Head Coach Martin Haag and 1st XV Backs Coach and former England International Ben Johnston.”
