NLD Knockout Finals Day Succes

On Saturday 25th April Lincoln RFC played host to the NLD Senior Knockout Cup Finals Day.  The day was a huge success with all those in attendance enjoying the hospitality on offer, even torrential rain towards the end of the day did not manage to dampen the good spirits.

NLD Vase Final – North Hykeham v Meden Vale

Local club North Hykeham faced their old Nottinghamshire rivals Meden Vale in the Vase Final.  North Hykeham finished their good season in style with a convincing win 24-5.

NLD Plate Final – Belper v Worksop

This exciting final was a close affair and could have easily gone either way.  As it was Belper, despite trailing at half time, rallied in the second half and two tries from Craig Innocent put them in front with an 8 point advantage.  A fantastic late try from Worksop kept spectators on their feet and despite making an attack with the final play of the game Worksop could not record the points and Belper held on for a narrow 34-33 win.

NLD Shield Final – West Bridgford v Matlock

Last year’s Finals Day hosts Matlock took on West Bridgford in the Shield Final.  West Bridgford, having lost twice to Matlock in League matches this year came out with a point to prove and an excellent game of rugby saw them do just that as they secured the win 25-13.  Bridgford are pictured below celebrating their win.

NLD Cup Final – Scunthorpe v Market Rasen

The showpiece of the day was the hotly contested NLD Cup Final between local Lincolnshire rivals Scunthorpe and Market Rasen.  The match unfortunately bore the worst of the weather with strong winds and torrential rain but the hardy spectators remained to show their support.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes it was Scunthorpe that made the try, backing this up with a couple of penalties they led going into halftime by 11-0.   A reinvigorated Rasen started their scoreboard moving after the break but went down to 10 men not long into the half.  Scunthorpe added a brilliant try which was duly converted and as the clock ticked down Rasen could only record a consolation try at the end of a game that saw the best team come out on top.  Scunthorpe lifted the NLD Cup with a final score of 18-11.

NLD President Phil Cass commented ‘It was a fantastic day of rugby for all involved, even the weather couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm & enjoyment of those in attendance.  Teams did themselves proud and we will look forward to another fantastic NLD Knockout Competition next season’.
