Mansfield U15’s complete Tour de France inspired challenge!

Mansfield Rugby Clubs U15’s squad set themselves a unique challenge to raise funds for a tour in the coming season. The aim was to cycle the entire distance of the Tour-de-France using exercise bikes in just 24 hours.

With 2277.5 miles the target, 6 bikes were ridden in 30 minute sessions, starting at noon Friday 25th July. 48 riders contributed to the mammoth effort that saw the challenge go right to the wire with the final half hour needing all the exhausted riders to clock up above average distances. After the incredible efforts of all involved the gruelling challenge was successfully completed with an amazing final total of 2283 miles.

mansfieldcycleThroughout the challenge, as in the real cycling event, a yellow jersey was awarded to the rider who clocked up the greatest distance in one half hour stint. After changing hands several times in the early stages, congratulations goes to Kyan Johnson who claimed the jersey 5 and a half hours into the challenge after achieving  14 miles(22km) and retained it for the remainder of the 24 hours. Throughout the event Kyan cycled for 4.5 hours and averaged an unbelievable 24 miles (39km) an hour.

Also, similar to the ‘aggressive rider’ prize in the real tour, a red jersey was awarded to Ross Laughton for his incredible efforts, particularly in the final stages, after riding for 5 hours and clocking up an impressive 88 miles (141km).

Through player sponsorship and the generous donations during the challenge, the event has raised a fantastic total of over £1500.

The club would like to say a massive thank you to all players, coaches, parents and friends who participated in or helped organise the event.  Thanks also go to Pure Gym and Body & Soul Gym for their kindness in providing the exercise bikes.
