Young Match Officials Impress!

October 31st, 2016 by

During the October Half Term the NLD Young Match Officials Programme saw an additional 45 Young Officials receive RFU Qualifications to enable them to officiate the game.  The RFU Level 1 & Level 2 Courses were both fully funded and run by NLD alongside the NLD Referees Society and the local RFU Professional Staff.

Both courses were a huge success with attendees from throughout NLD, many of the Level 2 candidates started their Refereeing journey at the Level 1 course in February of this year and others were getting involved in the programme for the first time.

YMO Oct

NLD Senior Vice President & Society Referee Chris Johnson who attended the course commented; ‘It has been fantastic to see so many young people getting involved in Refereeing.  Every game needs a Referee to go ahead and there are so many opportunities for Young Match Officials within NLD.’

As part of the Programme, the Young Officials are recording their progress on the England Rugby vInspired System and working towards logging volunteer hours.  These hours are recorded and on reaching certain milestones rewards and recognition are offered.

Sam Yates took part in the Level 2 course and said afterwards;

I refereed my first game of rugby after the course today and it was great!  I refereed Scunthorpe U13’s V Driffield U13 in a high scoring affair, with the full-time score of 21-19.  I’m hoping to gain some experience this year and hopefully join the society for the start of next year.

I loved it today, thanks for doing the course I thought it was great and gives people great platform to start something which they will enjoy!’

At the end of Thursdays course Maddie Crofts & Owen Stephenson were both presented with certificates & kit to reward them for their efforts so far having logged the most hours volunteering so far as Young Rugby Ambassadors.  Nottingham Rugby also very generously donated family tickets for their match against Richmond on Sunday 11th December, KO 3pm.

YMO Owen & Maddie

The NLD Young Match Officials Programme is aimed at 14-18 year olds in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire & Derbyshire and focuses on offering Training & Development to Young Officials getting involved in Refereeing.  With expert Mentoring available and the support of the NLD Referees Society the Programme is an ideal opportunity for young people to grow their knowledge, experience and confidence as a player as well as an official.

Members of the Programme will be asked to officiate a number of fixtures throughout the season; these could be club age group fixtures, RFU festivals, school fixtures etc. They will receive kit throughout the programme and will also be able to receive additional rewards as a result of successfully recording their progress in a log book provided by NLD.

Anyone interested in joining the NLD Young Match Officials Programme should contact Nicola McCombe.

NLD Game Development Conference

June 15th, 2016 by

Last Saturday, June 11th, the first Game Development Conference took place at Samworth Church Academy in Mansfield. This has replaced what used to be known as the Coaching Conference with the aim of being more inclusive and drawing in Match Officials , Volunteers, Coaches and Medical support as integral parts of the “Rugby Family”.

NLD Head of Game Development, Dave Andrews said, “I was really pleased that we had over 70 people attend, particularly as the weather forecast was unpromising and Australia v England was on the TV.”

gamedevelopconf2

Among the guest speakers were Darren Gourley the RFU Area Training Manager, John Widdowson the RFU Midlands Match Official Development Officer, Paul Carrol the NLD Referee Society Chairman, and Marcus Caton a highly respected and successful locally based Referee who entertained and informed us with tales from his journey from a small town in Australia to refereeing at Twickenham.

Simon Worsnop, the RFU National Fitness Manager, skilfully aided by local CRC Calvin Beech, then entertainingly delivered the new CPD “ Managing Contact” which he himself had written for the RFU.  It emphasised the importance of “specificity” in designing games to develop “Fitness” and demonstrated games, drills and exercises which could be delivered with this in mind.

Feedback on the day has been positive and appreciative and planning has already begun for next year’s conference.

Special thanks must go to those players from the NLD U17/18 squad who turned up and took part in the delivery of some of the more strenuous activities, thus enabling some of the attendees to wake up on Sunday morning and be able to get out of bed without additional help!

Young Officials Programme Launched!

June 13th, 2016 by

The beginning of the month saw the launch day for the NLD Young Officials Programme at Southwell RFC which saw a fantastic turnout of 57 young people from a range of clubs, including MANSFIELD, NEWARK, PAVIORS, SOUTHWELL, BAKEWELL, CHESTERFIELD, DRONFIELD, DERBY, LONG EATON, GRIMSBY, SCUNTHORPE, LINCOLN, KESTEVEN and STAMFORD.

The Young Officials received presentations and workshops from Jake Hill – a Young Official who started his journey back in 2013 and is now refereeing Level 6 games following a fantastic start to his refereeing career, Paul Carroll from the NLD Referees Society who spoke to them about the potential pathway they have should they choose to join the Society and John Widdowson (Match Official Development Officer) who highlighted just how important the role is that they play in the game of rugby. During a practical session outdoors they were given the opportunity to referee with various different scenarios in games. They displayed some fantastic refereeing skills and knowledge throughout the day, demonstrating huge potential for the programme as they embark upon their officiating journey. With the correct support from the club, we hope they will maximise their opportunities and experiences.

The Young Officials will now work with their Mentors to develop their experience and will be invited to attend the Level 2 Refereeing Course on 25th-27th October as the next stage of their development.

If you would like to join the programme then please contact Nicole Brown at [email protected].
