Melbourne Minxes Sponsor Womens RWC Player

July 28th, 2014 by

Melbourne RFC will celebrate 10 years of providing girls rugby this coming season and as part of their celebration they wanted to show their dedication to the Women and Girls side of the game. Melbourne RFC Minxes, the name given to their girls section, have announced today that they are the official Club Sponsor of Worcester and England’s Laura Keates for the 2014-2015 season. “It’s a fantastic chance for us as a club to show our dedication to the female side of rugby by giving something back from the grassroots upwards.” Said Melbourne’s Director of Womens Rugby Nick Woodland. “This sponsorship is our way to support an inspiring young lady by lifting some of the financial burden faced by Premiership and International players who still have to work”. In the Womens game the players have to hold down jobs whilst maintaining the physical and mental ability to play at the top level of their sport.

Melbourne RFC would like to wish Laura and her fellow England team mates good luck in the 2014 Womens World Cup #CarryThemHome

Laura Keates
Laura missed out on the 2010 Rugby World Cup but picked up her first cap against USA the year after while at the Nations Cup in Canada and, sticking with her swift movement through rugby, her second came three days later against South Africa.

The prop is now a firm fixture in the full England squad with 36 caps to her name so far and, after featuring in all 2012 Six Nations games, she played a part in all 12 England Test matches in 2013. She also scored her maiden try for her country in the Nations Cup match against Canada at Infinity Park, Glendale in August.

Newark U16’s Lift Sevens Cup

March 26th, 2014 by

Newark U16’s successfully defended their NLD Sevens title at Sleaford RFC on Sunday 23rd March.  The side, who were decked out in some colourful kit and orange headbands were certainly noticeable as they conceded no points in all four of their comfortable pool match victories.  Coming up against old rivals Corsairs in the Semi Final meant that they had to dig deep but a 26-12 win was good enough to book their place in the final.  The final was a meeting with Derby A who were not strong enough for the side of the day and Newark prevailed in a convincing 17-5 win.

In the Plate final Market Rasen took on Paviors, sides that had come through respective Semi Finals against Scunthorpe and Keyworth strongly.  On the day it was Market Rasen who came out on top, beating the Nottinghamshire club by a comfortable 31 points to 5.

In the Shield Competition Boston who had entered their first NLD Sevens Tournament took the spoils with a strong 34-0 win over Mansfield Blues.

The second Mansfield team however ensured that some silverware would be making its way back to Eakring Road with a convincing win over Kesteven A in the Bowl Final.

The last trophy of the day was awarded in the Rugby Man Final as local team Lincoln took on Chesterfield Panthers.  It had been a hard fought day at the office for both sides but it was the Derbyshire team who took the trophy home, beating Lincoln 17 points to 0.

It was a day with some mixed weather conditions although certainly warmer than 12 months ago!  Congratulations to all of the teams who took part and best of luck to those who continue on in the NLD U16 Competition.
