Graeme Gunn Medals at World Transplant Games

July 26th, 2017 by

West Bridgford RFC stalwart & NLD U20 Manager Graeme Gunn has returned home from the 2017 World Transplant Games in Malaga with two bronze medals. This was the first time he has competed in the World Transplant Games since his liver transplant in 2013.

Having his 60th birthday while he was in Malaga made it a double celebration. His family made the trip to Malaga including his daughter Nikki who flew in from Brisbane, Australia. He had a total of 16 family members to support him. #gunnsontour See photo
His medals were for Squash and Mixed Padel Tennis (a blend of squash and tennis). He missed out on medals in the tennis singles and doubles.

He said “I am truly amazed that I have won two bronze medals at such a prestigious event. My thanks must go to Rushcliffe Squash Club, The Rushcliffe Arena Sports Centre and Lady Bay Tennis Club. Finally an enormous thank you to my friend and personal trainer Yusuf Paterson-Mosafeer who enabled me to get to a level of fitness I have not been at for over 10 years.”

The 175-strong Team Great Britain World won a total of 360 medals. Over 50 countries from across the Globe took part in this spectacular celebration of life, with 1000+ transplant athletes and donor families, joining hands to raise international awareness of organ donation.

Transplant Sport is a charity which organises sports and social events for transplant recipients in order to highlight the benefits of organ donation and prove that you can lead a normal and active life again after transplantation:www.transplantsport.org.uk.

The Games aim to demonstrate the benefits of transplantation, encouraging transplant patients to regain fitness, whilst increasing public awareness of the need for more people to sign on the NHS Organ Donation Register, as well as the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Register, and discuss their wishes now with their families.

Run an Inner Warrior Camp at YOUR Club!

July 10th, 2017 by

Since the successful launch in January and the recent campaign in May. The work to attract more women to contact rugby has certainly proved to be a success!

*   Over 2500 Women & Girls took part across approx. 150 camps

*   Over 1000 new players attended

*   See snapshot of some of the successes here – Inner Warrior Round Up May 2017

And so, to build on this we are now running another Inner Warrior Camp campaign from Fri 18 Aug to Sun 3 Sep.  This is also during the Womens World Cup so a great time to recruit new players to your team!

What’s in it for your club?

Your Inner Warrior Camp will receive:

*   Support from local England Rugby staff in the build-up and during your event.

*   National promotion through England Rugby’s website including sign up options for new people.

*   Links to a national campaign across England Rugby channels and press that will be re-launched just ahead of all events.

*   Access to the England Rugby Brand Centre to design your club poster/flyer/social media banner and use the event guide with England Rugby imagery and phrases.

*   There will be opportunities in each area for certain events to be supported with further resources once the applications are in.

What do I have to do to register?

*   Simply click HERE to register your event This link will go live this Friday 23rd June. This will take less than 5mins if you know the date and time of your event

*   You MUST apply by Fri 14  Jul

What does the club do next?

*   Start planning how you are going to run and promote your Inner Warrior Camp, ensuring the whole club buys into this.  After all, this could result in more members!

*   As mentioned above, this coincides with the Women’s Rugby World Cup. So think of opportunities around fixtures etc.

*   Think of what will encourage local non-rugby women / girls to come down and have a go – not necessarily always rugby related!!

*   Once your event has been accepted as an Inner Warrior Event, get it on social media and ensure you share it regularly with as many local groups as possible

We look forward to receiving your application and welcoming lots of new women and girls into the Rugby Family!
