NLD YMO Appointed to England Rugby National Youth Council

September 6th, 2017 by

As the new season approaches and pre-season training comes to a close, there are plenty of things going on behind the scenes to get the season up and running. This isn’t only on a constituent body level, but also on a national scale.

One of these activities that was going on behind the scenes was recruitment for the RFU National Youth Council. The RFU National Youth Council is a voluntary consultative body, which is made up of 12 16-25 year olds from across the sport. The National Youth Council has been up and running since 2014 and in that time, it has developed the Young Rugby Ambassadors Programme. The council focuses on a variety of different projects and issues across the game such as:

  • The retention and recruitment of young volunteers, players and referees within the game.
  • Developing and leading the Young Rugby Ambassadors Programme.
  • Being ambassadors for the RFU and the sport across a variety of events and conferences.
  • Consulting and advising across the RFU on programmes and projects which have an impact on young people within the game.

Three new council members were added to the National Youth Council this September, these were Jazmin Wones (Norfolk), Michael Kirby (Buckinghamshire) and James Phillips (NLD).

James Phillips is currently the Young Match Officials Programme Lead within NLD, as well as being a referee for NLDRFURS. James has also conducted over 100 hours of volunteering on the Young Rugby Ambassadors Programme. James will sit on the RFU National Youth Council for 2 years, where he will look to shape the future of rugby for 14-25 year olds across the game. James said,

“I am very excited to be joining the National Youth Council at such an exciting time. England Rugby is at its best point for years and with an increase in women’s rugby of 215% over the last 4 years the game is growing more and more. Rugby has always been a passion of mine and it is a great honour to be able to work with NLD and the RFU to help improve and develop rugby for generations to come.”

If you are interested or want more information on the Young Match Officials Programme within NLD or about the Young Rugby Ambassadors programme then please get in touch with James on the following emails: [email protected] or [email protected]

Work Begins at Derby RFC on AGP

August 29th, 2017 by

Work is now underway on five new Rugby 365 England Rugby Artificial Grass Pitches set for completion by next season in Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire, Durham, West Midlands and Yorkshire.

Derby RFC have been selected as one of the host clubs alongside Billingham RUFC, Keighley RUFC, Shelford RFC and Stourbridge RFC and follow on from completion of the first three AGPs in Buckinghamshire, Somerset and Lancashire at the end of last year.

NLD Honorary Secretary Tracy Edmundson commented; ‘We are delighted that there will be an AGP in NLD and it promises to offer a huge number of playing opportunities in the local area.  It is an exciting time for rugby within NLD’.

England Rugby’s investment in AGPs is part of their Rugby World Cup 2015 legacy of delivering over £50m over four years into the development of 100 AGPs across England.

In four months of on-season usage since the first three Rugby 365 pitches opened in January, they have hosted over 250 matches and more than 30 festivals of rugby with a combined footfall of 20,000 players enjoying the experience.

The RFU expects the creation of additional AGPs will generate over 16,000 participants playing at least once every two weeks, with 58,000 players introduced to rugby for the first time each year.

Alongside the Rugby 365 programme, the RFU is investing £10m over four years into partner organisations to part-fund 40 Rugby Share pitches on community sites.

The University of Hull and University of Gloucester are due for completion by next season and will offer even greater access to rugby across their respective communities through multi-sport AGP playing surfaces.

Derek Gee

August 24th, 2017 by

Derek’s funeral / memorial service will take place on Thursday 21st September and people will be welcomed to Keyworth Village Hall at 12.30pm.

It is with regret that we advise that Derek Gee, Past President of Keyworth RFC, passed away yesterday following a short illness.

Derek was a keen supporter of all local rugby, and his company, Security Plus, have been principal sponsors of Nottinghamshire RFU for over 25 years, supporting the Pennant and Knockout Competitions.

Our thoughts and sympathies are extended to his wife, Doreen, and sons Anthony and Philip and their families at this sad time.

Global Law Trials

August 23rd, 2017 by

The World Rugby Executive Committee has approved the addition of six law amendments to the programme of global law trials following positive trials in specific international competitions this year. They will debut in full from 1 August, 2017 in the northern hemisphere and from 1 January, 2018 in the south.

The amendments, which relate to the scrum (Law 20) and tackle/ruck (Laws 15 and 16), are aimed at making the game simpler to play and referee as well as further promoting player welfare. They have been approved following extensive game data analysis as well as player, coach, match official and union feedback from the tournaments in which these six aspects of law were trialled.
