Derbyshire RFU Cup Finals Day 6^th May 2013

Hosted by Buxton RFC

The sun shone and the home of Buxton RFC lived up to its name of “Sunnyfields” for the Derbyshire Finals Day on Monday 6^th May, a stark contrast to the monsoon conditions of Ilkeston 12 months ago.  Buxton were excellent hosts of the day and were included in two of the final line ups which had 5 clubs contesting for titles from all over Derbyshire.

The first Final of the day was the President’s Trophy involving Buxton and Belper. Both teams were encouraged by a large crowd of highly vocal spectators and took full advantage of the dry pitch to run the ball at every opportunity. The game ebbed from end to end with both lines suffering some near misses. However, as the game entered into its final phase Buxton proved too strong and ran out narrow winners 25pts to 21pts.

In the 2^nd team cup old rivals Derby and Matlock were the finalists.  This game was a feast of running ruby. Two well organised, skilful and fit teams provided an entertaining game of rugby. Both teams took full advantage of the conditions and ran the ball at every opportunity producing a game that covered every area of the pitch.

Matlock ran out winners 21pts to Nil

The Presidents Shield final was contested by Buxton and Melbourne. Both teams were encouraged by a large crowd of partisan and vocal spectators.

This game ebbed and flowed with both goal lines suffering repeated attacks and this kept the crowd entertained. Melbourne scored twice just before the final whistle and carried off the Presidents Shield.

 Final score Melbourne 29 pts Buxton 17 pts

The Derbyshire Cup final was an eagerly awaited clash between Derby and Matlock which drew the largest crowd of the day. The game was every thing a cup final should be, hard fast rugby with no quarter asked or given. Fast skilful rugby covering all of the pitch with both goal lines being under attack for long periods. However, as the game entered into its final phase Derby took the lead and ran out narrow winners 19pts to 16pts
